My placement with More! magazine

Hi, I’m Olivia and I’m currently on work experience with the features team at More!

I have just two days left of my two week placement and, as is the case with most of the workies, I don’t want to leave! I have learnt so much in such a short time and have been given a fantastic insight into the industry. I’ve met lots of different people, been to exciting places and have experienced life as a real journalist as opposed to being just ‘a student studying journalism’.

I’ve got involved with everything from features meetings with the More! team to helping out on photo shoots. One of the most recent meant I was able to work with FHM and a popular female celebrity for one of their top secret, upcoming cover shoots. I also had the chance to attend a press day for the opening of the new Go Ape! course at Trent Park in London. It is one of the highest courses and even has a zip wire that you can skateboard along! Extremely cool but perhaps not for the faint hearted!

Each day is different to the last and even the regular jobs, such as doing vox pops for the website and transcribing interviews are new and exciting. Vox pops always bring up interesting topics and I recently transcribed an interview with Keith Lemon which had me in stitches!

In between jobs there are plenty of things you can be getting on with. It’s always nice to make some tea and coffee for the rest of the team who might be busy and it’s also useful to get clued up with the day’s headlines to see if they can act as inspiration for future features. Doing this meant I was not only able to think of feature ideas, but also interesting topics for the social network debate.

Working for a successful and well established magazine like More! may seem daunting but after spending the last two weeks here I can safely say it is exactly the opposite. The team are really friendly, but most of all approachable. If you’re positive, cheerful and show that you are willing to get stuck in you’ll have a great experience and hopefully come away from it learning just as much as I have!

Men at more!

I can’t think of many jobs where the words, ‘By the way girls, a naked man might be popping into our office later to bring us lots of cake’ do not come as a surprise…

Here at more! however, this kind of eye candy is a regular occurrence. One of the many perks of working here is that we’re never lacking in attractive male visitors - whether it’s chiselled models in beanies coming in for castings, promo men flaunting their goods in tiny Y-fronts or Edward Cullen lookalikes, us lucky ladies definitely get our fair share of perving opportunities!

It’s a tough life…

Trendland!
Over on the pic desk, we’ve recently put up an ‘inspiration board’ with pictures from photo shoots (and pics of hot men) that we love! One of our work experience girls put us on to this really cool website called Trendland, which is filled with fashion, celebrity and editiorial images with loads of different style shoots. This website is not only perfect for brainstorming ideas for photo shoots but also for ideas for college or university projects, so if you’re into art check it out!

my week at more! by Farron

Hello! – I’m Farron and I now only have two days left of my work experience on the fashion desk and I don’t really fancy returning back to Nottingham – I’ve finally worked out how to use the tube, learnt the ‘London dodge’ (my own expression for dodging those who don’t know where on earth they are going), and successfully become addicted to Ben’s Cookie (if you haven’t tried one – you must!). One thing I didn’t expect from the more! office was actually how calm it is, especially with such short deadlines!

Every day is different at more!.. mostly as a fashion workie you’ll be returning lots of beautiful clothes – which will lead to your wish list constantly growing. Calling up PR companies for prices where you get to say, ‘Hello, this is Farron from more! magazine!’.. Blushing at male models is also another part…fetching the post, as well as the odd cheeky chocolate run… attending a photoshoot – for me, probably one of the biggest highlights – I was fascinated by everything, from the way the model’s make up was applied (gold highlighter lipliner pen added to wish list) and then watching the actual shoot take place - it’s amazing how much hard work goes into finding the perfect final shots.

I’m so sad to leave on Friday as it truly a lovely place to be and hopefully will be returning very soon!..

Guest post… Amy doing pic desk work experience

Hey there! I’m Amy and I have been given the wonderful opportunity to have a weeks work placement with more! this week. As I’m currently studying photography at university I’ve been learning about the ins and outs of the more! picture desk…..and if there is one thing that I’ve learnt…….it’s that it’s GO, GO, GO from the start!

I couldn’t have asked for a better insight into the runnings of this relaxed, fun and flirty weekly fashion and lifestyle mag! Straight away I was introduced to how to follow and find celebrity trends, what image layouts are needed, how HOT the men need to be and most exciting of all…..I got the amazing chance to actually work on a full day shoot with the wonderfully friendly , welcoming and enthusiastic team!! With running around frantically for the previous days scouting for bubbly props (literally), pink heart shaped balloons, Hubba Bubba bubble gum, bow and arrows and children’s blowing bubbles, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into the antics of the studio and see how these colorful, vibrant and always cheeky images come about.

Wednesday 14th March…….and it’s shooting time!

On Wednesday we were straight into planning and prep at 9.30am and ready to help out in 4 wicked shoots! The first being with the beautiful model Paula and lovely American male model Donald! (the accent was to die for!) Wearing bunny ears, a cute on-trend, spring-coloured, two toned shirt and lemon skinny jeans, the pair were an Easter treat! The second shoot had a special guest…our wonderful pug pup! Our last minute panic over finding a dog worked out well with this little cutie!

Just before lunch we had a laugh with actor Reece Ritchie, who paid a quick visit for a fun and jokey shoot before dashing off for more showbiz drama! And finally, after hours of outfit changing, decisions between which floral wedges worked best with the hot pink back drop, which polka dot pleated skirt flowed best, which bow tie for the pug and all sorts of exciting clothing swaps…oh and a ridiculous amount of pizza for lunch for the team to stock up on, ready for the rest of the day….the last real life girls arrived….with their ‘Plastic Surgery gone wrong’ all on show!

Pop art bright, confidence boosting and casually fun is how I would describe the atmosphere of this real life story shoot and I really enjoyed chatting to the girls about their stories and getting to know them between shots. I learnt a lot to say the least and I have to admit……..after a long day of rushing about from model outfit changes, giving input into which images are working and which are not, to set changes and searching for cash machines …..I didn’t want the day to be over!… But to see the images in all their glory…you’ll just to wait for the upcoming issues of more!.

Although the early, early starts were a KILLER (when a uni students 12.00pm get up is the norm) and being a Manchester girl born and bred, the chaos of the London tubes and gazillion buses were a shock to the system to say the least! Yet the temptation of a cheeky hot chocolate and brownie on the way at Caffé Nero and an even cheekier and guiltier hot chocolate and toastie at lunch, while  window shopping as I pass the Prada, Armani,  Mac store and gigantic Topshop store (which has a salon and nail salon inside……really? Come on!) on the way home….to then be surrounded by the celeb images of Katy Perry the next day in the Prada dress I can only dream of……my week at more! was an eye opener to where I could be and what I could be doing in a years time! The buzzing London life style is calling……just have to get the Degree out the way first…………

Who else loves a list?

Us more! girls love lists (so much so that some of us are going to London’s first ever list-making night…you know you want to) so I thought I’d share my list of what this week’s hottest mag has taught me.

5 top fashion lessons learned at more! this week:

1. Bunny herding is not uncommon

2. That everyone should be glistening in metallic and high voltage neons this spring

3. Location van toilets are difficult things…

4.  Where the U-spot is (look it up)

5. more! is the most exciting and varied place i’ve ever worked

A week in the life of a fashion intern….

Interested in becoming a fashion intern? Well, no two weeks are the same here on the fashion desk which help keep it fresh and exciting! Here is a snapshot of my to-do list this week….

  • Go on appointments and pull clothes for the upcoming shoot (yes, this is like shopping, and yes I LOVE it!)
  • Chase samples from the PR companies (and lust over EVERYTHING that comes in)
  • Find a bunny rabbit for the shoot (yes, really!)
  • Chase model packages
  • Organise the main fashion shoot
  • and finally assist the stylist with anything he / she needs

Phew…. and breathe! Now the shoot is over we’re ready to do it all over again for next weeks shoot.

Look out for the final pictures for this shoot in our 10th April issue. It’s going to be a good ‘un!
